Hawaii’s Plantation Village honored Dr. Warren Nishimoto and Michiko Kodama-Nishimoto at its Eighth Annual Plantation Legacy Awards on Sept. 10 at the Honolulu Country Club in Salt Lake. For nearly 40 years, the husband-and-wife team has been documenting the history and culture of Hawai‘i through the people who lived it for the Center for Oral History at the University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa. As they prepare to retire, they leave behind a legacy of oral histories that have resulted in books, articles, videos, catalogs, photo displays and brochures on a wide range of subjects, including oral histories of Okinawans in Hawai‘i, survivors and observers of the 1946 and 1960 tsunamis on the Big Island, women workers in Hawai‘i’s pineapple industry and much more.
