Dialogue – Let’s Raise the Bar in 2020

I tried. I really tried. But by last weekend, I’d had it. And so I pulled out Season Two of my all-time favorite television series, “The West Wing,” and watched the episode that I wanted Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump to watch.

“Do you folks get it?!” I wanted to ask them. “Do you understand why voters are so disenchanted they may not even vote on Nov. 8?”

This is what I’m feeling less than three weeks before we elect a new president. One thought keeps coming back to me: How the heck did we end up in this mess? We’re talking the presidency of the United States — not some developing country!

But back to “The West Wing.” It was the first episode of the Season Two — the one in which Josh Lyman, President Jed Bartlet’s deputy chief of staff, is seriously shot in what is believed at first to have been an assassination attempt on the president. The episode flashes back and forth between the present and the early days of Bartlet’s first run for president. From it, we learn how the various members of the Bartlet White House came to join his team.
