WHO/WHAT: The East-West Center Arts Program and UH Manoa Music Composition Program present a trio of top musicians from the prize-winning Pro Musica Nipponia ensemble of Tokyo, who will perform traditional and contemporary Japanese instrumental music, including new premiere works by UH composers. Joining them is guest violinist Sean Yung-Hsiang Wang.

Pro Musica Nipponia (or just Nipponia for short) is a group of leading composers and top-rank musicians devoted to performing a wide-range of classical and contemporary compositions from both Japan and the West. The ensemble, which performs all works using traditional Japanese musical instruments, was founded in 1964 with the intention of devising a vital form of expression based on ancient forms and instruments linked to traditional aesthetics, and yet simultaneously responsive to the spirit of the present. Since the early 1970s, the group has performed throughout the world on overseas tours.

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, March 5, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 6, from 4-6 p.m. at Orvis Auditorium on the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa campus. Performance seating is general admission on a first come, first served. Doors open 30 minutes before show time. UH campus parking is free on Sundays.
