The Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii celebrated the Shintö shrine’s 109th anniversary with its annual Autumn Omatsuri (Autumn Festival) service and program on Oct. 4.

In keeping with the Izumo Shrine’s 2,000-year tradition, church and community leaders set aside a day during the autumn harvest season to express gratitude to the kami (gods) for their guidance in matters relating to our country, state, city, organizations and personal needs, and to ask Kami for continued blessings in the future.

Prior to the actual shrine service, a parade carrying the mikoshi (portable shrine) was held along Kukui Mall, leading up to the Izumo Taishakyo Mission. The shrine service included offerings of tamagushi (sacred branch) by various city, state and community leaders.

A stage program and a fellowship meal prepared by the Izumo Taisha Fujinkai and Kyodan followed the service.

Entertainment included performances by Hawaii Matsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko, Bandoryu Dancing Group, Hanayagi Dancing Academy, Dazzman Toguchi, magician Mike Ching and karaoke by the Dennis Oshiro Music Studio.
