TÖKYÖ — “Unbroken,” a Hollywood film based on author Laura Hillenbrand’s book about the life of U.S. Olympian Louis “Louie” Zamperini, a World War II prisoner of war in Japan, will debut in Tökyö next February. The film, which was nominated for Oscars in three categories, was released in December 2014 in the U.S. and elsewhere.

“Unbroken” was directed by actress Angelina Jolie and generated controversy in Japan for its depiction of the savagery committed by the Japanese Imperial Army. It shows Zamperini being brutalized at the hands of a Japanese soldier. “Unbroken” will premiere at Theater Image Forum in Tökyö’s Shibuya district. Yuji Sadai, the head of its distributor, Bitters End Inc., said he wants the Japanese audience to watch the film, as it “depicts human beings under the conditions of war.”

The film is expected to screen in theaters across Japan at a later date.
