Urasenke Foundation of Hawaii president Dr. Genshitsu Sen hosted a dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on July 21. Attending the event were Dr. Sen’s Hawai‘i guests, as well as participants in the 43rd annual tea seminar at the University of Hawai‘i. They were treated to Hawaiian music and hula by Halau O Na Pua Kukui, led by kumu hula Ed Collier. At age 92, Dr. Sen is full of energy and enjoyed greeting his guests personally.

He told the Herald that this year is an especially important one because of the commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Dr. Sen, who is Urasenke’s 15th grand tea master, has devoted over 60 years of his life to sharing his message of “peace in a bowl of tea.” In Hawai‘i, several hundred members of the Chado Urasenke Tanko Kai Hawaii Association, who practice tea ceremony, help to perpetuate that message.
