Approaching The Sacred: Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawaii

WHO/WHAT: The Hawaii Japanese Center presents an exhibit on Hawai‘i’s Japanese Buddhist temples. The basis of the exhibit was the book, “Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawaii: An Illustrated Guide,” written by professors George and Willa Tanabe. The Tanabes researched 90 temple sites ac ross the state. The display points out architecturalBulletin-Baord=Buddhist-artifact features, alter arrangements, temple art and furnishings, and explains the symbolic meanings of these objects. The traveling display is augmented with artifacts from Hawai‘i Island, mainly handmade Buddhist objects, from the collection of Leonard Chow.

WHEN/WHERE: Through Aug. 29 at The Hawaii Japanese Center, 751 Kanoelehua Ave. in Hilo. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
