“People Are Persons: Buddhism, LGBTQ and You” is the topic of a lecture being given by The Rev. Patti Nakai of the Buddhist Temple of Chicago. The public lecture will be held at Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii (1685 Alaneo St.) on Friday, Nov. 14, from 7-8:30 p.m.

From the basic Buddhist principle of engi (conditioned arising) to the Zen teachings of kahitsu (not necessarily so) and the emphasis on equality in Jodo Shinshu, there are lots of reasons why Buddhists don’t have a problem with sexual orientation and gender identity.

Rev. Nakai was born and raised in Chicago. She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in Shin Buddhist Studies from Otani University, Kyoto, Japan. She received her full ordination (kyoshi) from Otani-ha sect of Jodo Shinshu. She has been at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago since 1995.
