Each year, Japanese American communities around the nation set aside a day to reflect upon the legacy and lessons of the incarcerations that happened during World War II. This year’s Honolulu program will take place on Sunday, March 23, at the Pearl Harbor Theatre.

The event is co-sponsored by the World War II Valor in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor and the Honolulu chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. The 3 p.m. event will be a screening of the Hawaii Five-O episode, “Hoʻonani Makuakane, Honor Thy Father.” The show originally aired on Dec. 13, 2013. It weaves together the experiences of World War II veterans, Pearl Harbor survivors, Japanese American internees and reminds us all of the lessons of war.

Immediately following the screening will be a talk-story with actor James Saito who played the pivotal role of David, the former Honouliuli internee. Seating is limited. Deadline to reserve a seat is today, March 17.
